:welcome from Central IL!! I am a chicken and horse owner And we currently have 7 cats on our 5 acre property. You are well set up for livestock and there are several livestock owners on this forum, so you should feel at home. Thanks a LOT for the really cold weather!!! :p I had to add the "c" in the last sentence which tells you how old this winter has become for me. Brace for impact next week. Glad my 3 horses have stalls and that I bought 50 bales of straw last year. Join Backyardchickens.com (linked to this forum) and you will get terrific advice regarding chickens.
I’m in all of the sister groups. I love them.

Hello from Virginia!
Sounds like you've got quite the little farm going. Congrats!
All you need now is a cow. ;)

As you narrow down what breed of chicken you want to start with, consider the Rangers - various names Red Ranger, Black Ranger, Free Ranger... Generally a hatchery hybrid/mix that grows quickly, generally lays pretty well and is a good, cheap starter bird that will do well for you as a layer and meat bird.

You have a lot on your plate Carla! Don't forget to schedule in some time to sleep. ;)

My husband and I bought a fixer upper as our first house. It had been badly abused and neglected also. We cleaned out the inside with scoop shovels and wheelbarrows if that tells you how the people who were there before us were living.

The outside took several of the biggest roll off dumpsters, and countless pickup loads to the dump. Fortunately we were young!
But we turned it into a home and a beautiful piece of land.
Someday you'll get yours to that point and it will have been worth all that hard work. :)

Welcome Carla, glad to have you. Little by little, you will see the fruits of your labor. I sure wish I had that much land instead of a small city block in concrete jungle. But I make the best of it. Fortunately I can grow year round and have 5 chickens.
