Hello! I am an amateur gardener, and by amateur I mean amateur. I grew up on a farm, but I didn’t do much plant wise. Because of the whole COVID-19 thing, I started to grow plants, as you do. Hasn’t been working out the best. A squash plant took over most of it, a sweet potato plant is currently working on escaping, and half of the garden has sadly perished ( cough cough, rabbits and squirrels, cough cough).

I came here mostly for advice, and you can bet I’m going to need a lot of it.

from Central IL!! There is a big learning curve with gardening.
We mostly laugh when we hear, "I am starting to garden to feed my family."
When you start out you either have beginner's luck or lots of failure. It's ok!
There are ALWAYS reasons why plants grow well or don't well. As you study you will learn what works for you and what doesn't.
I think you should wipe your mind of ANY magazine or online perfect photos of fruits, vegetables and flowers. They pick the best of the best of the best bc they want to sell you something.
We garden to ENJOY GARDENING!!! Even the failures are ok. You can decide to try again, in the future, try again THIS SEASON (with cool weather crops), or decide that plant isn't for you.
Did you know that if you wait to pull out some weeds, of course before they go to seed, that the weed will take the hit from insect pests instead of your vegetables? I see this every year, and it has protected my crops without spraying with ANYTHING.
Perfect gardens don't exist. We all do the best we can, and share experiences.

Welcome! My husband tells me we can buy organic fruits and veggies at Whole Foods cheaper than what I can grow them. He also complains that I feed half of it to critters. Oh well, I love it and that's all that matters.
