Howdy from another energetic old broad in north Idaho Lori!
Your zone 6a? Pardon my ignorance, but are Canadian zones interchangeable or compatible or...what AM I trying to say?
Lets see, does zone 6a in Canada have the same lows as the USDA zone 6a?

Yes, same measures. I do try to outfox Mother Nature by trying to extend from start to finish. I pretend I am really a zone 7.

Some plants don't fall for it though. ..

I spend the end of march all the way through to somewhere in April prodding the earth to see just how frozen it is.
I have seedlings in the basement under home made lights with compact fluorescent bulbs. I do this because our electricity is nasty expensive.
I wish I could can the sun!

:frow ... Welcome @CanadianLori ... from down south, where it's colder. :D I have zone envy too, in my dreams I am in zone 8.

I have been able to push quite a few zone 5 perennials through the winters, but lately it's been hard to count on the early snow cover before the deep freeze.

Hi Lori and Welcome!

My grandfather grew up in London ... Ontario ... Wikipedia says half of all Canadians live south of Richmond Hill, ON. So, at 43° North, he was a southerner :).
