I tasted a small orange pepper while in the garden. A small bite seemed cool and sweet. Threw 3 in into my stir fry. Chopped another for my salad, took a taste and my mouth, lips and nose interior are still burning. Yes the size and color should have told me the truth. I guess the taste in the garden was too small to tell.. I have not tasted my dinner yet. Is there a way to counteract the heat?
I know plenty of you like the burning lips and all but not me! Help!!!!!

Thanks! I think you saved my dinner I added sour cream and I think it cut the heat.I had taken the peppers out but they had cooked enough to add plenty of heat. I drank milk, then lemonade, but my lips still burned! I put the sour cream on my lips. That finally stopped the pain! The skin on my hand even burns!!!!

I can't take much pepper heat, Cat'. The flavor is fine if I can get to it. I especially like jalapenos!

I think I could have mentioned cream cheese but I see now that you were wanting to save that dish as well as cool yourself.

There's a much better cook out there who might have suggested some highly appropriate, cooling ingredient. (I wonder what ranch dressing would be like splashed in . . . .) But, I was right here on TEG thinking about this 'n' that.

You have my sympathy Cat. I processed close to 10 gallons of peppers, mostly jalapenos, and I cut them up the first night without gloves ( gloves? those are for sissies! ) Even after washing my hands several times, and shampooing my hair, when I took my contacts out my eyes burned a little. That evening my hands were also burning and my dh suggested I pour milk on them. I did and it really worked!
He's not usually one who knows much about home remedies but he nailed it that time.

Fast forward to the following morning when I casually put my contact in my right eye. ACHIWAWA!! The burn was intense! I guess they had all night to marinate. I had to toss them and get a fresh pair. I rinsed my eye with milk and it helped some, but eyes are so much more sensitive than skin.

Glad your dinner wasn't ruined!

Oh, I've done that once too! Such pain! :ep

I did not know about the sour cream, yogurt and cream cheese. I never really felt that milk helped much, and I seldom have buttermilk on hand.

I was making this appetizer recipe a couple of weeks ago for a church picnic and squirted myself in the eye with juice from a hot banana pepper. Had to think to myself--certainly, this is what I get for showing off! They were a big hit though. Everybody was asking for the recipe. :p

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the recipe. Will be trying it later this week along with stuffed pablanos.
