Um, milkweed is a very thickly spread weed here. I dont let DH cut it, because of the monarchs, but theres no shortage up thisaway! In fact, yesterday on a walk to choose the location of my deer stand yesterday the kids and I found a monarch caterpillar (a little late in the season???) and placed him on a milkweed to sun. I'm going to check tonite and if he is still there we will bring him in where its warm, he was so sluggish and I dont see him surviving the cold nites in the forecast.

Sparkles, We live in Southern Minnesota...I can see 6 plants from my window here...I let them stay, even if they POP UP in the perennial beds, the flower beds...not so much in the food garden...but there is no shortage of Monarchs or Milkweed here...

Hoodat, the Monarchs started gathering on September 9th. here...in the massive maples we have, they now are gone...
headed I suspect south...

I believe HOODAT deserves a Big round of applause for this post and the love/respect he has for the monarch's

We'll be seeing them soon. Their arrival at the numerous butterfly groves along the coast Of Southern California is eagerly awaited every year. Pismo Beach has the best Monarch festival but Monterey has a pretty good one also. They are rigidly protected along the way by sharp eyed park rangers and volunteers to keep the public from unduely disturbing them while still allowing them to appreciate their beauty.
Unfortuately for San Diego they veer away from the coast North of us on their way to their Winter resting places in Mexico.
It is only every second generation thet makes the journey and it's a mystery how the butterflies that have never before made the trip know where to go.

In about a week or so we goto the coast (most years) to see the monarchs going down the coast line. There is always a beautiful line of butterflies just fluttering down the horizon... I love being at the beach at that time of year. Its off season, but its warm... so few crazy visitors and tourists, but tons of butterflies. Its the most amazing view! I wish I had the pics from 3 years ago... I had them landing on me on the beach :D

Anyways, we've recently had quite a few here... they've been on the humming bird feeders.

I bought a milkweed plant (or I bought a butterfly weed and they look similar). they propagate real easy and now I have like 8+ extra plants that I plan on planting this fall.
