Literally! We've been dealing with 50-60 mile an hour wind gusts today, with temps dropping from 50 this a.m. to 19 tonight. We had an old metal shed we were going to set up for meat chickens in the spring, but that has taken a trip across the yard & is going to have to be scrapped. I braved the wind to check on the chickens (not happy, but still hanging out outside) and my cold frame, and I was happy to see that my carrots and spinach are still cozy and growing. :) I'm excited to see how long I can keep them going.

Anyone else having some crazy weather today?

Not crazy weather just COLD weather. The low this morning was-17, and although the chickens are ok the look on their faces is not happy either.

I still am finding it hard to believe that a compost pile I started 2 week ago is still going strong despite the cold temps. It's mostly horse manure with some chicken manure. Last week before this cold front came in I cleaned up the corral and put the frozen horse manure on top of the barely warm pile and in 24 hours it was steaming hot. :) Now that's crazy!

Oh MY! Sorry about your shed!! Best of luck with your cold crops!

It is one of those 'I am not going anywhere' days here! Blizzard warnings last night... 7-10" of snow was predicted but 7" blew away...
Many schools were closed... that's a rare thing up here... ya just put on your skates... :D
9*F right now and going to -4 tonight with wind gusts over 40 mph ... makes it feel like -30 ... burrerer!

The wild turkeys that came to feed today were even holding up their feet ... :/

Yeesh! It definitely could be worse! At least we didn't get snow. Too bad the chickens can't hang out with the compost pile - it would help them keep warm!

Hi Curly_Kate,

Our weather is the exactly the same as yours! I live on the second highest ridge in this county and we've had some of the worst gusts today in the 3 years I've lived here, well over 50mph.

I had a sapling apple (that wasn't doing all that well anyway) get blown over sideways since the ground is so soft from all the rain. My DH had to put some cinder blocks on the tin roof of our garage porch to keep the tin down until he can get out there to repair it. And my poor neighbor, all of the underpinning on her new modular blew under and all her lawn decorations too.

I had most everything put up for winter, so other than my recycling bin, I didn't have much else to go flying across my yard. It's been crazy today! Puts my nerves on end to hear the roof and window casings rattling all day! We usually don't get this kind of weather pattern here until February, then it's like that nearly every day of the month.
:hide

At least I know now for sure that I put my bee box in a good place. It's still standing! I was really afraid to look!

We got snow yesterday, and lots of wind (I was watching the pine trees behind the coop, they looked like they were going to snap!) then it went to rain, and last night the high tem was 54 - until the cold front, with thunder and lightning, went through - this morning it's 36 out right now. It's supposed to be cold for the weekend, then get milder again next Monday, with more rain.

I'm so glad that we only have 50 mph winds when it's warm. That sounds just awful. But it did suddenly get windy and cold. Yesterday morning, the forecasted low for last night was above 35 degrees. When i went to bed, the forecast was 29. So i guess this weather is surprising everyone. It's still just 40 degrees this morning - thankfully not too windy. Our southern bones can't handle too much of that. ;)

I'd try blowing some warm air in your direction, but we're apparently all out.
