My cat is the killer kind- so today when I heard the animal in distress call- I expected to rescue a mouse, bird, chipmunk, etc. I reach down to extract caught creature from cat (thinking it is a chipmunk/squirrel) only to find a weasel!! This little thing was mean! It was screaming and gnashing it's teeth-like nobodies business! Usually I can't distract the cat from a kill, but trust me he was ready to give up!
In case you don't know (like I didn't) they have a very stinky musk, that they use when they are threatened... so, we all smell like a skunk!
I have a few chickens who have decided they want to spend the night outside of the coop-that is about to come to an end...
That was a little more excitement than I needed!!

Well Lesa, I bet you didn't need any coffee after that! :p Your cat is probably going to check IDs a little better now!
When I was a kid we had a weasel killing our rabbits, but I've never actually seen one in person.
Glad you didn't get bit, and the chickens are all there. :)

Yikes!

I've only recognized 2 weasels in my time, Lesa. Since, we have ground squirrels here, I've wondered if I may have seen weasels at other moments and thought they were squirrels.

I suppose they are like ferrets. Family that have had ferrets as pets talk about their musk.

My cousin recently sent me a couple of pictures from the "critter cam" her son set up in her backyard. One was a fox bee-lining it across her yard. The other was a black bear! She had no idea that either were likely to show up on her property!

Thistle- I said the same thing... I bet all the chipmunks and squirrels just got a new lease on life!!
Steve, when I reached down for the "rescue" I thought for sure it was a chipmunk or a baby squirrel... you can imagine my surprise!
I live right on a highway in the city- and I have seen several red fox, lots of deer, woodchucks, birds of all kinds, and now a weasel. When you think about how adaptable these critters are, it really is amazing.
I am happy to report that with windows open- the smell was gone in a couple hours!

You mean the tomcat brought the critter in the house?!!

I once discovered a fisher in my driveway when I lived out in the pines! It was rather startling to see a 10 pound, russet brown weasel-like creature raised up on his haunches looking at me!

Worse was finding a badger ambling towards me and the dogs when we were having a sit-down while on a hike. The dogs thought I was trying to communicate with them. What I was doing, while making strange hand gestures, was saying, "Shoo! Go back that-away! Okay, Dogs! Look at me - I'm outta my mind! No! Do NOT look over your shoulders! Shoo! Pleease!!"

Oh yes! For reasons I will never understand he enjoys toying with his prey in the house!! The stories I could tell...
I hope I never have to tangle with a badger! Now that would have really hurt your dogs...
