My grandfather completely redid his 1/4 acre property in Cleveland by pulling out the clay and filling it in with manure, one wheelbarrow at a time. He did this during the Great Depression. He had a job but he was laid off--got it back as soon as they could afford him--had to learn to grown food. Everybody lived with vacant lots dotting the landscape so they hunted, gardened, and raised meat rabbits and other small livestock. When I was little, his soil looked as black and rich as mine does, and I live on what used to be a working farm!
