Hey everybody, this is a random thread about habaneros. I was just wondering what you guys think the hottest habanero type is. I am currently growing orange, red, yellow, and brown. So far it seems to me the brown ones are the hottest., possibly one of the hottest peppers I've ever had! They also have excellent flavor. I'm waiting for my Trinidad scorpions to ripen so I'm wondering if they'll be even hotter. They're not butch ts but I'm sure they'll be blazing nonetheless. Anyway, lemme know what you guys think!

you're just on the verge of being 'hot' with this type of pepper! my dh is a heat/spice fanatic! i have yet to successfully grow my own Trinidad Scorpion or the Bhut Jolokia since i would need a green house to keep them warm and humid enough.

i believe the hot habaneros are the red and orange types. the yellow, white and chocolate tend to be mild compared to those 2.

btw, if you have any sweet peppers growing in the area try to keep them growing as far away from your hot peppers as possible. something causes the sweet peppers to take on some of the heat, and the hot peppers tend to get mild on their heat.

I've only ever grown the reds so they're the hottest, but I have some ghost peppers that put them to shame.
Actually I don't know how any one could tell how hot any of these are without some sort of an electronic test equipment!!! The human tongue can only stand so much abuse!!!

I'm not sure about the brown and yellow being milder. The brown habanero I had was MUCH hotter than the red and orange. And yes, the moruga trinidad is the new hottest pepper. It's a cross between the moruga and the trinidad scorpion. I've already ordered my seeds from pepperjoe.com!

The Red Savina is generally considered the hottest *pure* strain of hab. There are lots of people out there looking to alter the gene pool by crossing a hab with other chinense peppers so eventually the term "habanero" may become meaningless unless you have genetically guaranteed heirloom seeds. Other red habs are not as hot, while brown (chocolate) tend to be a little hotter than most other reds, with white being about as hot as the average red but due to their smaller size it's hard to equate unless comparing equal volumes, and orange then yellow trailing behind them all.

The "average" trinidad scorpion will be hotter than the "average" Red Savina Hab, but actual results can vary quite a bit from the averages. Still, expect the TS to be hotter. While I like ridiculously hot peppers, I find the milder red habs are the most versatile as you can add them to dishes in amounts where you have a higher pepper to heat ratio... the dish will be just as hot due to having more peppers, but more of the great hab flavor too. For hot sauces I feel the opposite, superhot peppers are better then whatever additional flavors you want can be added through other components of the sauce.
