I grow a lot of them but the only reason I ever planted them was because my stepfather called every green veggie a kohlrabi. I always thought they were really brussel sprouts, until I saw a pkg. of seeds and they looked like some sort of alien from outer space.
At that point I had to grow some to show everyone, and haven't stopped since.

I cut them up in thick-French-fry-like chunks. I found I enjoy beets more this way too.
Put some oil in a baking pan and toss the cut vegetables in it. Bake around 400 degrees F, turning with a spatula occasionally, until they are lightly browned and softened. We often do mixed vegetables this way, but certain kinds (like sweet potatoes) will have to be added later in the baking process or they will burn.

I am imagining RICH watching those little plants as they grew thinking, "Now I'm going to figure out what the heck he was talking about and let everyone else in the family know, too! mumble, mumble . . Good Heavens!"

I can't think of any other veggie common to America's kitchens where we are eating the stems, other than celery. Are your kohlrabi and celery stalking you in the garden?

Steve

I love Kohlrabi. I like that it stands a long time in the garden until you are ready to use it. I like the kossak giant. It does not grow that well for me so the kossak get fairly large. I like it steamed and stir fried .

Okay, I'm going to showcase my ignorance here (and not for the first time...).
So, when I read that you use the stems, and I see you guys talking about using the stems, you are talking about the round bulby part right? Not just the stem the leaves are supported on?

Haha, thanks for asking Thistle, I've never seen kohlrabi growing, I was wondering the same thing!
