How big should tomato plants be?

I've been saving egg shells for some time and plan to put some of the crushed shells in the holes when I transplant my tomatoes.

As for roots, I've heard if you water them too much when they are young that they will not send deeper root systems into the soil to mine for water. Just a little tidbit of info...... :)

It is a little surprising to see that "80%" but I'm sure that in many areas, the tomatoes benefit from deep planting.

I've just learned that in some places around here the soil temp at 24" is 47F. Well, obviously you aren't going to plant down to 24" but 47 - year around :(!!

Laying them on their side has resulted in plants that want to grow horizontally. Staking became essential when I've done that.

So, I just make sure that they go in with the seed leaves covered with soil and call that good enuf . . .
