How Cold Before You Put On Heat ?

the house was old not a lick of insulation underneath the floor the walls had probability r-2 in them, the windows were single pane... all the window got covered with plastic every fall except 1 thats where we would grab from to load up for the day and night, once it was to low to grab from we would go out and reload it from the furthest pile of wood<that was a once a week job> if we knew that a big snow storm was coming, i mean a 4-6' dump we would haul and stack wood in front of the old fireplace<we were told not to use by the owner>. we would keep paths shoveled out to all the piles, a couple years it was a losing battle, we were digging down to the tops of the piles. the only thing that was always shoveled out was the propane tank. usually by the time spring rolled in we would have about 1 cord left of fir... so yes a slave, but enjoyed living there....

My temp is like Thistle and I am so spoiled. DH kept the fire going always at night or early morning, so now just me and DS here. He is allergic to a lot of the wood. DB and DS have been working on the roof and DS started getting allergies from sawing 2 x 4's. We have found out pine does not bother him as much. We have wood left from last year, but the pastor of our church thinks we might freeze, so ever since DH got sick he has been bringing us wood. This year he brought like 5 cords. He brings his splitter and him and DS get it done. Another man from church showed up and helped for awhile. Today is DS's first day of work. Just got his first 8 hour a day job. I got up and got the fire going and a lot of frost on the car. The picture is of the new wood. The garage has wood, the woodshed has wood. Pastor loved DH.View attachment 22242 View attachment 22243

All I can say is wow! After helping my husband with wood for the past 40 years-that is a ton of work your pastor is doing for you.

Back in September, I came into the house and asked DW if she had turned the heat on. "Haven't touched it!" Apparently, the thermostat had not been lowered from 68° from about June 28 ...

On October 7, I thought that the furnace might be cycling on and off through the afternoon. With automatic systems, of course it cycles, even if it's months and seasons . But anyway, it did hit 60° that afternoon with lots of wind. And, the furnace only had a couple hours off.

There has been that 60° temp every afternoon this month until yesterday. Really, it was back in September that the outdoor temperature did that big dᴉlɟ and the thermometer plunged.

Yesterday, it didn't look like it would warm out of the 40's but it did ... just before our 4/100 of an inch of rain . The wind died and I'm not sure if the heat came on overnight, once the thermostat was lowered to 61°

Steve, I know you are in a different climate totally from me and you probably look at rain differently, but how much good does 4/100" of rain do you? Last year in a hot dry spell a weather forecaster prattled on for the entire forecast that we were going to get rain. It was going to rain! Expect to get rain! Prepare to get rain! He was so excited. At the end he mentioned the forecast amount was 3/100". That amount settles the dust on our dirt roads for maybe 3 hours. It may temporarily get the grass wet but I don't notice the ground being any softer or moister after 3/100".

Not only is 3/100 of an inch pretty much a non-event for me when it's hot and dry, but that "rain" only fell on a small part of the viewing area, not here. I understand a meteorologist needs to be passionate about his chosen profession and this guy certainly is. Technically he is right, 3/100" is rain. But shouldn't his enthusiasm be tempered with a bit of "beneficial", especially when we need real rain that badly? I was getting excited then had a huge let-down when he finally mentioned the expected amount.

@Ridgerunner , I looked at the radar map just before I taking my evening shower ... in the bathroom. A tiny patch of green was coming our way. Several minutes later, I told DW that it might have rained. Neither of us could rouse ourselves enough to step outside.

At 4am, I ventured out. It was to check on frost but it was immediately obvious that the air was too warm. Down the dry backsteps, everything seemed as dry as usual - grass, board fence. Out in the driveway the pickup had 6 drops of water on it.

My best guess is that there were as many as 12 drops a few hours earlier but half had already disappeared. I don't understand how the WS goes about capturing 3/100 of an inch of rain and measuring it!

oh how nice we have a cold front coming through the next 2 days, bang all the windows are wide open it was a bit chilly inside when letting the girls out at 4 am my weather station said 41*outside and 49* inside... shame it will only be here for a short time ,back to the low 70's..

but tonight they are calling for the low to be around 36* going to shut a couple windows tonight.... hope they are wrong about that 36 thats darn close to frezzing and the kiwis do not like the cold temp, would like to keep them on the vine a couple more weeks or a month would be better....

i've been meaning to fire up the furnace just to make sure it was still working. last night i turned it on for a few minutes. probably the latest season we've had. it has been down in the high 30s and low 40s a few times, but then the weather gets nice again. we shouldn't need to run it that much if at all for the next week if the weather forecast holds.
