Hybrids in plants actually produce more pollen. If you are talking about crossing 2 different species (mule), then yes, could be sterile.

Gets confusing as any 2 different lines (within the same species) make hybrids. The reason you make hybrids is for hybrid vigor-healthier, more vigorous, offspring.

To take this another step further where you have seperate male and female plants. The industry producers can then take the resulting hybrid and take the male hybrid plants , root the cuttings and sell the male only plants to the public. Job security !
