Grafting would be the best way. You might get shoots from the bottom of the tree, but if the tree is already a grafted variety, the rootstock will likely be less desirable or a wild variety.

Here's one thread showing a grafted apple tree . There's several methods of doing it. I've not done it before, but I'm sure you can turn up some tutorials online if you google fruit tree grafting.

It would be a great skill to have and I hope to try it someday.

Generally grafting requires they have a fruit tree of their own. They would take the cutting from a full branch or 2, and then would have 'slips' cut into their tree where they want the production branches to go.

Do a google search for 'grafting fruit trees', lots of fabulous how to sites... find one with pictures so its easier to understand.

In most cases fruit trees can't be rooted from cuttings because they require a hardy rootstock that works well for the production of the tree and the type of enviroment your tree will be in. Most trees don't do well on their own root stock and are actually grafted onto better stock to create a hardier tree. I believe all my apple trees are on different root stocks and not their own.

Hope that makes sense!?'

and again.... :welcome
