How do you tell if fruit/vegetables/plants have had frost or freeze damage?

Ice on the bird baths this morning, and frost on the front lawn. My outdoor monitor said the low was 32, but it's placed in the entry right above the front door, so I know it got colder out there under that clear sky last night.

Sprinklers covered the big veggie garden with ice!

Ice everywhere outside the garden.

If there is any of this "sealing" with ice advantage people talk about - those plants had it! Otherwise, those plants have had it. I wasn't there long enuf for all the ice to melt with the sunrise.

interestingly, in the other garden where it froze about 4 weeks ago - barely a touch of frost. some basil close to the trees is still alive. and, that's the way it was, october 3rd , 11am.

I still do not understand it, but nothing was ruined. I brought all the peppers in that had size and tomatoes with any color. Now we are going to have 70s again and the small peppers are growing, still have flowers, the cherry tomatoes are turning red, the other tomatoes are slowly turning. I see more squash and flowers. The green beans have almost stopped. Lettuce is growing.
