How to divide MONSTER dahlia clump

When I divide my dahlias, I do it shortly before planting in the spring. I don't wash my fall roots, just cure and store with whatever soil didn't fall off after curing.

To divide, I put my large root system into a bucket of water to wash off the soil and carefully wiggle the roots until they break apart into smaller root groups.

Got some good advice regarding Dahlia's and other tender bulbs. On Mid American Gardener they suggested starting your bulbs indoors to get a good root system going, and then transplanting in about a month outside. I am trying this with some gladiola to see if it works.
