I extend the daylight at night. When the light turns on the chickens start walking into their coop and I lock them in. It shuts off several hours later.

That's a very cute idea you are a great neighbor and friend.

My hens are laying again. They started about 2 weeks ago so all is not lost. I have 1 molted hen(out of 8) that is laying and 4 of our pullets just started this week. They are speckled sussex and I love this breed. I have had comets (great layers but they get egg bound). I have had easter eggs (still have one) and I love their beautiful eggs. I have had buckeyes which are nice sized and beautiful to look at but once I tried to sussex I am stuck on them. They are very good layers, good brooder and mothers and they lay in the winter. Nice dual purpose bird as well.

Hunkie, I have a 9 wk old sussex and she's my first one. I think they're beautiful also. But I hope mine doesn't go broody often. I really don't want a broody hen!

I have 7 hens and last year 2 went brood.... 5 did not. I got a pretty far group of chicks and 4 new hens. Had some roosters go to freezer camp last month. If you only have 1 she probably won't go broody.
