For all you folks going stir crazy....every time I think of this whole Corona episode I think of this scene....and that was BEFORE they started sending folks home to stay in social isolation.....

Got the "good" news from the employer that the company is covered as "strategic infrastructure", so we will keep working even if there is a quarantine / shelter in place order... probably even extended OT. Good news from an income perspective, but not thrilled about continued mixing with a large population should that situation arise. (this now doubles as a mask emoji) 
I was actually looking forward to the possibility of getting stuck at home for awhile, to do some long-overdue house-wide reorganization - it would give me a chance to find all my misplaced tools.

Working long/extra hours here too. Have chemical burns on my hands from all the disinfecting at work, despite gloves. We now have to sanitize each cart or shopping basket for customers before and after use, no exceptions. They are using diluted bleach for that, which sets off my asthma and makes my chest hurt. There is a shelter in place order here in Illinois, and for the first time in two weeks we had a normal sales day. In the last week the store has hired three new cashiers, and my department has pulled in one former employee temporarily, has another one on standby if needed, and a couple of interviews today.
I am not doing anything but going to work, coming home, showering, and crawling into bed. We are having problems with the regular flu locally, and I have been exposed multiple times. Trying hard not to get sick....I am loving the OT, but at this stage I would honestly welcome getting to stay home for a few weeks, paid or not. It is hard to be customer service levels of pleasant for so long, especially when people are panicking and grumpy over things you can't control.

I TOTALLY sympathize with you @Prairie Rose! Hang in there. I know that bosses are reluctant to consider any change to the sanitizing procedures - but maybe if you point out that the bleach is going to corrode those carts - which will need replacing, perhaps they'll let you use something else? …. if you can get it

@Prairie Rose I am terribly chemical sensitive and get all messed up by chemicals. I have a suggestion for your boss. Get a 2 gallon pump up garden sprayer and fill with Clorox solution. Mass spray the carts. Leave out in the sunshine to air dry as sunshine KILLS VIRUS. If leaving outside to dry is not an option, what about a hand held blow dryer (like for hair) which would be more sanitary than wiping down each cart. It might be worth a shot, can't hurt to ask.

My daughter works at Walmart. She's been working there since before Thanksgiving and really loves it. It is getting hard on her though, specially since the store has increased the limits on products people can buy. The cashiers are really getting the brunt from all the pissed off people. Not to mention the ones that come through sick. It's really getting hard.
I keep her daughter while she is at work. We've decided to keep our granddaughter with us full time. That way we don't have to worry if she happens to bring anything home and passes it on to her & then to us. It may be too late already, but we'll do the best we can and trust in the Lord to help us through it.

Thanks for all the well wishes! I have no say in the cart sanitizing, that is nowhere near my realm of responsibilities, we are just doing the best we can with what we have. Henless, I couldn't even imagine working at a Wal-mart atm...I just work at a tiny county grocery store. Your daughter has my sympathies!
It is not all that horrible, but the last place people think of front line workers in this mess is all the poor souls at the grocery store. Most of the cashiers, baggers, and stockboys are teenagers and college students, or parents looking to make a few extra dollars while the kiddos are at school. They work long hours, and bear the brunt of disgruntled shoppers. Most of the extra work at the moment is falling on them too, since that's where people tend to bottleneck at our store and cluster together. They get sneezed and coughed on, yelled at, and have things thrown at them on a regular basis, and now they have to stop every so often and disinfect their entire lane. Every time a cart or shopping basket gets put back or pulled out of the front or switches between customers, a bagger has to sanitize the handles before someone else touches them. All for minimum wage, although the corporate office finally coughed up some extra money for the duration of the shelter in place after mass complaints. Most of these kids didn't sign up for this...I feel for them daily.
I will certainly survive (especially since I work in a perishable department and there's usually walls between me and customers), but man do I feel for those kids.
