Usually such critical deletes will ask you to verify once or twice that deleting the account is what you really want to do. I agree, you probably just logged in with a new/other account. Could have been hacked possibly, but lets not assume the worst just yet. Do you remember your original user name and password? If you don't, an AOL rep should be able to verify your identity, give you your username if you don't have it and reset your password. It's been almost 20 years since I used AOL, but I would assume it is still a web-based email account.

@SmartRed , your experience having your gmail cut off sounds strange, unless that is some restriction that your Internet Service Provider put into place. If it was an @gmail.com address, you might try logging in directly to gmail if that isn't what you do normally.
No, in this case I was told that this account would no longer be available due to changes in the company system. I was given instructions on how to save the parts I wanted to keep -- and I think I did -- but I never saw how to make a new account. It is not an account that I choose to use often.

Don't you just hate how electronics can really screw up your world, for no apparent reason? I know these are first world problems, but that doesn't make it any easier to take.

Lucky I got my old AOL account back. Was on phone with support for over 2 hours. And now AOL is not free for me anymore, I had to sign up for one of their programs at $10 a month. So what was free is now $120 a year. Worth it, for a select number of my clients, the business hours don't apply, they email or Tx me if after hours. The super rich don't want to have to wait to get a reply.

Hooks and lines ...

Ah well, it is what it is.

Sorry that it was so difficult for you, NyBoy. I'm sorry that I couldn't think how to help beyond that telephone call. That would have left this hearing loss guy are a complete loss ...

Your relationship with AOL reminds me as little of mine with the bank ... your relationship with the rich better not come to remind me of that bank!
