It sounds like you have really good neighbors. Do you live near water ?

Oh yes, in one form or another. This lake is about 15 minutes from our house, there's a river we go to splash in on hot summer days about 30 minutes away, and the ocean is 45 minutes to an hour away. I'm getting a fishing license and we're going to go again in two weeks. :) At Mr. Helpful's request, we are having hand-made fish sticks tonight! Eh...just need to find a recipe lol. I think just breading the trout should be fine though.

You must live in a small town. Here in NY you don't even know your neighbors name

It was like that when I first moved in. My neighbor on one side was the only one who wanted to visit. Everyone let their dogs out the front door and it was just one huge mongrel pack running around the front at all times. The cops or animal control showed up pretty regularly.

I really think it is the chickens that changed everything. One of my neighbors (actually uninvolved in the fishing expedition, but probably would have been if he was home) got some chickens. He had too many eggs and saw us at the mailbox and gave us some. We loooooved the eggs and got our own chickens. We started talking/being friends because we both liked chickens. Well then we had too many eggs too, and he could no longer give us some, so we started giving them to different neighbors.

Pretty soon the kids are coming out to play with each other while the parents are chatting over cartons of eggs. I met the two little old ladies on my other side because they would drag chairs over to our fence, and grow cherry tomatoes for the single purpose of tossing ONE tomato into our flock when they are grazing and watching them chase each other. You can hear their laughter all over the neighborhood. We give them eggs too.

Now they are getting a coop this year, and asked to buy three hens from us. :)

People started keeping their dogs indoors because the kids all play in the street with one mom or another watching, and no one wants the kids getting jumped on.

Suddenly its a great neighborhood and we're all friends! Thanks, chickens.

It's so nice to see how everyone got together to help you go and catch some fish! I'm glad your son had a fun time as well. Where we live at, there is a catfish pond down the road from us, and we take a short drive every so often on the weekend to relax and fish awhile. It's so exciting!

What a great thing to bond over. I've met some of my neighbors over chickens too. People will see me somewhere and mention my chickens. Neighbors are one of the best things in life. I've only had a couple of mean or antisocial neighbors in my entire life. Be a good neighbor and you will have good neighbors (most of the time)!

What a great neighborhood! I can almost hear the laughter of those 2 little old ladies. So glad your chickens brought so much joy to them.

in your area do you need a fishing license? here we need to pay for one unless it is on private property. my retired dad just joined a fish & game club & they have a pond along with shooting ranges for both gun & archery. but, to use the pond for fishing you have to get your fishing license.

@Nyboy, you're going to have to get a friend who fishes, and have them show you the ropes.
Fishing can be a solitary sport, or a social event. But don't expect to catch many fish if you are very loud.
My DH's favorite way to fish around here is to wade the creeks/small rivers around here, and cast as you wade.
