Garden Master
We have a Great Pyrenees that was given to us because she killed chickens. Yeah, uh-oh....... She was 10 months old and beautiful. Her name is Paris and her former owners turned her loose on 3 acres with free ranging chickens. Yup, the ultimate squeaky toy. Then they left for work, leaving her alone, unsupervised and they came home to dead, slobbered, chickens. They must have punished her terribly for it, because when we got her, she HATED the chickens and would charge the coop, snarling and growling. Not only that, but they GAVE her EGGS for a treat! WHO DOES THIS???
They actually made her an egg sucking dog. What idiots.
It took 2 years to bring her around. Lots of time, patience and love. I have never struck this dog. A mere light scolding sends her under the deck to escape Mommy's disappointment. She patrols her yard, barks at acorns falling at midnight, hates the neighbors-hits the wire fence biting the wire when they DARE go in their backyard, barks at people walking down the street, barks at the feral cats and other dogs she sees, barks at motorcycles.......did I mention she BARKS?
I got some chicks in December and in the bunch was a crippled rooster. It might sound mean, but I let him out in the yard so that if Paris took a swipe at him, at least I wouldn't lose a laying hen. Besides, I could CATCH him! We started with an hour or so, supervised and Paris did nothing. Nothing. Nothing never felt so good. We progressed slowly until we could let the laying hens out and she stood guard. This was HUGE! The young chicks even followed her like a chicken entourage.
Paris is very food aggressive. She does not share at all. So it is best that I feed her after the chickens have gone to roost for the night and I close up the coop. But sometimes there are goodies that I go ahead and give her. I have scolded her for snapping at the hens when she has food and they want it too. So she knows that is a no-no. But she is so smart, she figured out a way to run them off without actually hurting them. She lunges at them, and they scatter. (then they come right back) LOL It is hilarious to watch.
This evening I gave her dog food with steak drippings on it. Yummy stuff. I set the pot on the deck and told DH, watch this. Sure enough the vultures circled Paris and boldly stuck their little beaks right in her food! Ya' don't mess with the QUEEN! She lunged at them and I got a picture!
