Part of my job is studying dog food. I have at least one hour long meeting with one or more dog food manufacturers each month where I listen to them tell me about their dog food and why it is the best. I've currently got 50 pounds of dry dog food and a case of wet dog food in my garage, and 3 bags of dog treats sitting on my kitchen table waiting for my opinion on it.
Most of the dog food manufacturers I see have really high quality dog foods and there are a lot going for them. Probiotics, cage-free turkey, and the case of canned food got my attention because it is gmo free.
Just like with people food, there are very good foods and very bad foods. The big difference being that your dog doesn't get to choose his meal, and usually doesn't get a variety. If you pick a bad food, he might well eat that bad food his whole life, and suffer from it. When it comes down to ingredients, GMOs are the least of your worries. It's perfectly legal to include euthanized cats/dogs/horses/zoo animals/roadkill/4D meats in pet food. It's perfectly fine to include certain known carcinogens, and even saw dust.
I'm not against big business, but I am against decorating bags of food with pictures of roast chicken and fresh vegetables when there is nothing of the sort inside that bag.
