I LOVE growing fruit! A few years ago we planted some red raspberries. They have grown huge- and are covered in gigantic raspberries! There is nothing like going out after dinner and picking a quart of these beauties! As with most garden produce, if you have only had raspberries from the grocery-you have never had raspberries. My advice to you, is to dedicate a little corner of your property to these berries. I don't think you will be sorry! I will definitely be adding more plants!

Totally agree! I was lucky enough to have some wild blackberries on my property... once they start producing I pick daily and freeze what I don't eat. Nothing better than a blackberry cobbler or crisp in the middle of winter.

I can't seem to beat the birds to 'em. They must sit on the branch all day long until the first sign of ripeness appears and then the pounce on it. I'm not that quick.

I prefer fruits too, I've always dreamed of my own orchard. Here's some Raspberries from the garden.
Nothing like that sweetness taste.

I love the blackberries too! Made jam once already, and have another bowl in the refrigerator ready to go. I do prefer the raspberry- I like the taste and the fact that they have very few seeds. I am surprised the birds aren't after my berries more...knock on wood! The ones I have trouble with are the elderberries- I have to pick them the instant they are ready or they will literally be all eaten!

Lesa, I agree. I am sooo loving fruit. I guard it with my life and having fruit not from the store is superior!

Lesa, I planted a golden and a red raspberry after hearing you all rave about homegrown berries! The ones from the farmer's market are not that sweet. There was one tiny golden one and it was sweet! Then for the first time, I had a sweet blackberry! Alittle dish of them were given to us by a restuarant owner of this tiny place. I should have asked where they got them from but I didn't. That weekend I ran to home depot to pick up one. Now, I can't wait till next year to have berries. The plants are small but still alive!

Do they need heat to make them sweet? If so, I think I'm in trouble. :(

I don't think so, Mary. I think too much rain can make any berry taste watery, but you should be fine. Oh yes, greenthumb- that is what I am talking about! Beautiful!
