I used to use vaseline on the pole my humming bird feeder is on, making a one inch wide band of goopy vaseline around the pole. The ants figured out how to make a bridge with their bodies across the vaseline "river" (each one making the supreme sacrifice, for the good of the team)Then the other ants would just walk across the bodies of their comrades, straight to the feeder! The pole finally got kind of mucky with the pile of greasy ant bodies. I had to find another solution, and it wasn't so organic.

I use DE and it works. I several different kinds of ants here and they always seem to want to pop up where I don't want them. SO I PILE A WHOLE BUNCH RIGHT DIRECTLY ON THEIR HOLE AND IT KILLS THEM! Remember, the ants have to come in contact with it in order to feel the effects of it. I have killed alot of unwanted pests inside and outside with it. Mater of fact, I had ants walking up a post one time and I dusted the post and the base of the post with it. And within a couple days they were completly gone. With small ant holes they will be gone the next day. But, with huge ant hills, it could take several days. With each day you will see less and less. I use it with my chickens too. They love to dust bath in it. I also use it in my garden. But not alot, becuse I don't want to harm the good bugs. Good luck! :D

I just read this today in Countryside, contributed by a reader: She and her husband each take a deep shovelful of ants from the top of two nests and swap them. The ants will eliminate each other.

Thought it sounded like an easy fix!

Ants will fight for a whle when mixed like that but it will end with the stronger colony making slaves of the weaker one. I guess ants are a lot like people.

She claims it eliminated their ant problem. She figured that the invaders killed each others queen.

I take a kettle of boiling water and pour over the mound - I love doing that! I don't think the ones crawling in my greenhouse (or my house for that matter) are fire ants. These are just those little horrid ones that pile up in your potted plants and crawl all over your kitchen and bathrooms. :barnie
