So, this will be my first garden. We finally have the space picked out, but the bf wants to bring up a rototiller to get it ready for me, and wants to wait for spring. I, on the other hand, am willing to dig it all up by hand and get started NOW! Lol. Anyways, I started a lot of seeds in coffee filters and paper towels in "sammich" baggies. I transplanted some rutger's tomatoes and sweet banana peppers first (the peppers did the best) into the little seed starting trays, then, just today, I picked out some others to transplant. Lemon basil, two types of ornamental peppers and my sugar baby watermelon. The lemon basil, I could have done without, but I'm hoping to sell/trade started herb plants this spring. The ornamental peppers, I'll be keeping 2 of each type, and sending one of each down to my mother, the rest will hopefully be sold/traded. The watermelon, well, I had a seed pack from last year or a few years before, but it was opened and only contained 7 seeds. I planted them just for the shoots and giggles of it. I actually LOST that baggie on the fridge (it's messy up there) and found it today, with six HUGE watermelon seedlings! They were about three inches each! Now, most of my seed tray is full, and I have some others that I want to plant, so I've been thinking about doing the toilet paper roll thing in a freezer drawer. I also saved the foam container from mushrooms that were part of dinner last night, and used that to plant some spearmint, since the seeds are so darned tiny. Now, I need to transplant some milkweed seeds and I'll soon have to transplant two more types of ornamental peppers and garlic chives. Plus, I have bell peppers (cali. wonder AND carnival mix), rhubarb, carrots, beets and a ton of other seeds that I haven't even started. I'm just hoping to goodness that I don't create too much work for myself later in the season!

Don't feel too bad...I have gotten a bit carried away myself. I Have 7 full flats of seeds started so far. GOing to start 3 more flats this weekend. I have a 4 shelf mini greenhouse with cover in the dining room with lights...then felt I needed more tray space, so my husband brought me home a metal shelf unit that was 7 ft tall with 6 shlves. He cut it down so I have one unit with 4 shelves and one with 2. I went and bought 8 more shop lights for the 4 shelf unit and we got it all up and running...in the dining room too! Have to find somewhere to put the other one. All this has come about because my husband bought me a greenhouse for valentines day. SO I had to be able to start seeds indoors, so I have something to move out to the greenhouse latter!!!!
I have seeds aplenty...can't stop buying them. Now I've started swaping them...starting to loose track of what is still coming in the mail....just pitiful! :D But lovin it! :tools

Feelin springy :coolsun
Christie :tools

Oh jeez. I was scanning for things to plant in and spotted my saved egg cartons. I was going to give them to a local farmer, who I sometimes buy eggs from, but hey, they looked like perfect seed starters! So, I now have 2 dozen roma tomatoes in egg cartons, a dozen Cali. wonder bell peppers, a dozen italian parsley and a dozen milkweed sprouts. I only put one seed per compartment, but I have the feeling that I'll have more than enough plants. Now, I have whatever is in my sprouting baggies (I have five baggies, and each has up to five varieties), mustard greens, carnival mix bell peppers, sweet corn and cilantro to start. I'll probably add more banana peppers, ornamental peppers and maybe some more tomatoes. Plus, whatever other herbs I come across.

Oh yeah.... I used cardboard egg cartons too! Going to trade some foam ones with my neighbor who has chickens for their cardboard cartons for my plants. Good stuff!!!

Aren't they perfect?! I was going to buy another seed tray or two, but they're $4 a piece, and well, I'm cheap. The egg cartons are too perfect and free. :) To be honest though, I used styrofoam cartons. I'll just pop the seedlings out, rinse the cartons and put them away for next year.

That definitely works too, I'm just going to cut the bottoms out of the cardboard ones and stick them in the ground so not to disturb the roots. I have bad luck transplanting any other way. So I quit trying. :(

Most of my seeds were started in the coffee filters/paper towels, so they were really disturbed, lol. Most made it, though my tomatoes didn't seem to appreciate it. My romas that I planted today went straight to soil, instead of sprouting them first. Maybe I will try some direct sowing later, or maybe even try some romas in the paper cartons, so that I can do as you do. Are tomatoes usually delicate with transplants?
