I did something unthinkable. But in my defense it was the children's fault. They went and got sick with vomiting and diarrhea and the teenager got Mono. And I was too busy working and taking care of them that...

I left my tomatoes out in the cold overnight and they got killed by a frost. this totally sucks. Arghhhhhhhh..... I guess I could order plants. I looked at Abundant Acres and they have all the varieties I wanted but can't ship until Early April. My last frost is in March 21. And I wanted to get them in before them and use the Wall o Waters I got for xmas. They do have a southern selection but it isn't the ones I wanted.....

Those freakin children are always thwarting my attempts at a hobby.

You have something more important going on than gardening - you are a parent, O.

By "punting" I think Boggybranch probably means: go with Plan B, or Plan C, or Plan Z . . .

I'm here to tell you that there are some very good and very popular tomatoes out there and often, they are one and the same variety :). A reason that some are so common and widely available is because they are useful in many parts of the country.

I swear, there must be a place somewhere where 90% of heirlooms all do fantastically. For the rest of use, there are fewer choices and there's "Fantastic" - or some more modern hybrid.

I used to grow only Fantastic and Large Red Cherries. That was about 25 years ago . . . (one of the reasons I "moved on" from Fantastics was because I got Super Fantastics, one year. Same problem when I went from Sweet 100's to Sweet Millions. . . . but, I digress.)

There's more to gardening than heirlooms, more than seedsaving, more than tomatoes . . . I swear, for some folks - gardening is 95% just smelling the good earth. And, what's wrong with that?

:hugs Steve

Thanks Steve and Boggy.

It is a big loss as far as time goes. I been nursing those little seedlings since Jan 1st. I am actually prepared for it because it seems like life happen almost every year in some form or another. So usually supplement my seedlings with nursery transplants.

But my other seedlings need some care. In fact, I am supper confident that all of New Orleans (and all of the tourists who were here for Mari Gras) is seriously sic with the same infectious diseases as my kids....

I won't plant anymore tomatoes this season. My spring is just around the corner and I can get pretty good sized nursery transplants from my favorite little nursery. My peppers in my Bio-dome didn't die so I am good with those. I will just continue as planned. Although I am thinking of ordering from the Abundant Acres if I can get the neighbor to go in with me. They are owned by a few workers from Baker's Creek. I won't get plants till early April but I also wont have to nurse and care for them. Which is likely to be a bonus... We shall see...

Ding, ding, ding, ding.......we have a winner.

Gardening will throw you a curve, every now and again.....but NOTHING comes before family.
