If you can't find any to plant- remind me next fall- and I will send you some. I had one or two growing wild, and now I have tons of them! Can't say that I saw an increase in Monarch's, but I am happy to help them if I can!
You can buy the seed for the perrenial varieties. I don't think I've seen the wild variety for sale but it is probably available if you look hard enough. Perhaps in the herb specialists. It has some medicinal value.OldGuy43 said:Can you buy milkweed seed?hoodat said:The Monarchs are in trouble right now due to loss of Winter habitat to illegal logging in Mexico and monocropping in the US. All that weed spraying is taking away the milkweed the caterpollars need. If you want to help them out plant some milkweed in your flower garden.
If it's the same caterpillar that frequents my dill, it goes by the simple name of "Black Swallowtail Butterfly". Very pretty things, black wings with yellow spots running down the sides.Ridgerunner said:I like some butterflies. I always have a caterpillar on my dill that makes a nice swallowtail butterfly. I don't know which swallowtail. The closest I can find to it is the Anise Swallowtail but that's not in my area. Those caterpillars live unless a bird finds them.
Great! Thank you Thistle!thistlebloom said:Look here Oldguy: http://www.butterflyencounters.com/store/products.php
I have seed saved from an orange butterfly weed this summer that I'd be willing to share. The butterfly weed I purchased as a plant has never set seed, but these I started from seed a couple of years ago and they set lots of seed.lesa said:If you can't find any to plant- remind me next fall- and I will send you some.
