Is he aggressive or overly protective? He looks very gentle but I have read that cane corso need very strong owners cause they can be so strong willed (potential for dominance problems). I have an English mastiff. And he requires a firm hand. or voice. I always wanted a Neapolitan mastiff but they get the negative reviews as well.

Mastiffs are my breed. They are the most gentle souls.

We had two Bordeaux Mastiffs before Spartacus. They tended to be more "over protective" than our Spartacus is. But, we took Spartacus to puppy classes, and to congregation on Shabbat when he was a puppy. He got well "socialized". He has never had a bad experience with man nor beast, so far, and we would like to keep it that way. Because once he does have a bad experience, the "genes" may kick in to be more aggressive. But so far He doesn't have an agressive bone in his body. though, I think he would protect us if he felt we were in any real danger from a person or animal.

Like all Mastiff types, they have a mind of thier own. And don't always "hop to" unless you find the right motivation. Spartacus will do ANYTHING for an ice cube!! That is his favorite treat! Maybe living in the desert does that?

I think the key is, like with children, you have to be ALPHA, you have to be consistant, kind, but firm when you give a command. And you miust never let disobedience "pay off" even once! If you let them rule the roost, you will regret it.
