I used a spot on flea and tick med for Penny, and I think she is having a reaction to it. Lots of itching and scratching, and not a sign of fleas of ticks for quite some time.
The application was on the 19th, so it is into her system by now, but I went ahead and shampooed her with Dawn today just in case it would help cut the oil from the medicine. I have been giving her benedryl, but it doesn't always help. I think I will give her one and a half pills this evening before bedtime. Various sites I have visited suggest 1 mg per lb of body weight, and she weighs about 36 lbs.
I have some hot spot/itch spray, but she doesn't like me to use it. (non-aerosol) Some times I insist. She was scratching some before the application, but more now. And she was getting fleas and ticks before.
This is Sentry XFC brand. After the fact, I googled it and find lots of people complaining it causes bad reactions, mostly about 2 hours after application.
Does anyone have any ideas what else I can do to alleviate the itching?

Feel your pain. Our dog has allergies to nuts and fleas. Maybe grass as well. He is a mess in summer.....

Hate to suggest further shampooing but in for a penny, in for a pound...how about an oatmeal bath? Works for humans, just might work for the dog.

Up the Benegryl dose, go to pet store and buy Medicated shampoo Dawn to harsh for her. Soap her up with medicated shampoo and leave on for 10 to 20 minutes before rinsing off. I put dog with shampoo in dog crate to sit. The longer shampoo sits on dog better. If she still itchy you may need some time strong from vet.

OK, @Nyboy, we shampooed Penny with Sulfodene Medicated dog shampoo, and left it on for about 18 minutes. She is getting very wary of me and the doggie bath tub. She's outside drying out now, and trying to find something stinky to roll in. Thank everyone for the suggestions.
I hope this helps. I did give her one and a half benedryl this morning, and will again at bedtime. We have an appointment on Tuesday for a vaccination, so I will talk to the vet about getting a different flea/tick repellant. And relate what has been happening. The first 6 months we had her, I got some complete stuff from the vet, but didn't use that this spring.

Lucky there is a big movement we over vaccinate our dogs. You got Penny from rescue, they should have vaccinated her before adoption. In Europe only puppies are vaccinated adult don't get vaccinated every year like we do $$$$$. I vaccinated my dogs as puppies then give booster about 4 to 5 years later. The reason I feel comfortable doing this is, Vets needed a way to make up the money they where losing so they where telling clients if they didn't want shots then they had to run blood titer to makes sure dog protected. I have seen thousands of titer never heard of one coming back dog not protected.

I have no doubt that the vets are looking at the bottom line. Our vet is probably more expensive than some here.
I wouldn't worry about getting bordatella vaccination but the day care we take her to requires it. We only take her there for socialization, as we don't interact with other dogs/owners much.
Also, she needs a worm check. She has recently discovered "chicken nuggets" out in the yard, and gobbles them up before we can stop her.

Once the benedryl wears off, she's at it again. Maybe not quite as bad as before the Sulfodene bath. Right now she is sleeping, which is what she does most. And best, haha.
I didn't tell you all that she is now sleeping in DH's room, under the bed. This was her choice. I am sleeping better without her snuffling and snoring at my ear.
Penny's loyalties have switched over to DH, as he walks her and takes her to the creek. Which is what I had hoped for, originally. It's all good. Now, if she can get over my trying to poison her with flea control! :hide
