. . . interested in having chickens.

Here is an idea that might catch his interest ;):

Bantams are sooo cute! Tiny, tiny little chicks that grow up to be . . . little chickens!

Some bantams are actual breeds and they are pretty cool. Let's not worry about them for awhile, tho'.

Some bantams are miniatures of larger breeds. Something like Barred Plymouth Rocks are little square hens you could easily fit in the box that comes with a pair of lady's shoes. Might even get 2 in there.

Of course, it is real cute to have a flock of all the same barred chickens running around but Mr. Roo can be something different. He thinks he is plenty different anyway! He can be a Rhode Island Red bantam. He will put on quite a show with those shiny red feathers.

And their chicks? Marshall, you will know from the time those cute little chicks come out of the shells whether they are male or female. Since people are usually looking for chicks, you'll be able to say, "Welp, that one over there, tugging on that stem of grass. That's a boy. And, this one here sitting on the toe of my boot. That's a girl." And just like that, those will be sold and go off down the road to another person's chicken coop. You'll have the Moms and the Dad and they will still be looking with great interest & excitement at whatever you bring them from your garden or kitchen.

Of course there's always Dutch Bantams - full grown about the size of a pigeon.

He could turn a bedroom dresser into a tiny little coop for them. :gig

He could bring them inside at night, so the bears wouldn't get them! They're no trouble at all when they are sleeping.:p

Lesa, I used to have about 20 Coturnix quail hens in my garage.

I had eggs, eggs, & more eggs.

Little hard to hold while cracking into a frying but just fine for little deviled egg hors d'oeuvres, and lots of them!

Okay, sex-link chicks, tiny bantams, bedroom dresser coop for the night, eggs/eggs/eggs . . .

I have no trouble at all with my chickens flying... but I think that is because they are so heavy. Would you have to clip wings if you wanted the little gals to free range?

If he free ranged them in his netted gardens he wouldn't have to worry about the flying off.

Can't ya just picture Marshall heading out to the garden with a cat and a flock of tinsey chickens at his heels. :D

Of course Marshall should have some little bantam chickens. Everyone should have chickens. They are a great source of entertainment, companion ship, they eat bugs, and they give you eggs. :D OK I did my part. :D

Right on, that's it in a nutshell. :D And they come in so many pretty colors and patterns and some have fluffy hairdo's and such. Yes, Marshall, you need to start collecting chickens like the rest of us. Just don't feed them any beans--they'll blow up! ;)
