Id still do some quail inside. Some simple cages, compost the shavings, and have quail and eggs. Those little things would be ideal for your situation. They'd get plenty of filtered sunshine right through the windows. Couple of well placed clips on the cages plus some mouse traps to keep the cats at bay, you'd be making food and manure in no time.

Rabbits are often housed indoors too ya know. I see cages on craigslist pretty regularly. Tan the hides, fill the freezer with meat, cold manure for the garden.......I'm just itching to get rabbits (is it that obvious? :gig)

Marshall, Marshall, Marshall, Marshall...what are you thinking?? Chickens are not going to draw bears, because your Livestock Guardian Dogs will keep them safe AND keep the bears away so you won't have to worry about your chickens, bovines, pigs, rabbits, sheep OR kids. They will keep the owls and hawks away too...and maybe the meter reader if you want them to.
