When I worked weekends about 85 miles north of where I was going to school M-F, I sometimes felt that it was necessary because of ice and snow to add about 10 more miles to the trip on Friday and Sunday evenings and travel a straighter and flatter highway. That route took me through a city.

During those trips, I would often  cry passing through the urban area. Wood Smoke and Fuel Oil Smoke was so noticeable it could be seen. My eyes would begin to water 10 or 15 minutes into the mess. The air improved more recently primarily because of natural gas from Canada. We also have some of the lowest electric rates in the US, we are told.

Electricity is mostly from the dams but wind turbines have really been showing up on those hills to the south. Electric heat is so important in apartment complexes. (It's also important to the tech industry and their server complexes.) Anyway, Winter air quality has improved.
