Yaaa! That helps take a load off your mind. :)
I still have a few more things to get in the ground but I'm hoping to be done by Wednesday.

I'm in the weeds!!!!
I am so far behind on things.....

I do have to say that the beans and squash are coming up in the "hot" garden just fine. I have my fingers crossed that they will continue and not die. My sunchokes were in that garden too and they started poking thru yesterday. Everything is so late this year. That is the reason I am behind. The leaves just filled out on the trees. It is the second week in June and we just got leaves. What the heck is going on??? Today should be a good growing day. I watered this morning and of course we have T'storms coming. Doesn't that always happen. Rain on the day you water. If I didn't water we wouldn't have any rain.

So I had to come up with a blerp to put in the booklet that goes with the tour. We each needed to come up with a "learning" thing. Mine was on weeds. This is what I wrote.

What is a weed? When asked most people will say "dandelion, clover, burdock" but if you ask me, a weed could be a beautiful flower, if it growing in the wrong place. If you look at my lawn you will find dandelions, clover, lamb's quarters, mustard and burdock along with every other "weed" imaginable. Why? Because to me they are all useful plants and some are trying to tell us something. I use all of them in one form or another. Dandelion is a fantastic liver and kidney cleanser, great in salads, cooked as a pot herb or made into a tincture for future use. It also tells me that the soil is heavy compacted clay and needs aeration. Burdock is a blood purifier. It tells me that I have waterlogged acidic soil. Clover, tells me the soil is lacking in nitrogen and the animals love it. Jewelweed is used as a poison ivy treatment. Everything has a use, whether medicinal, food, fodder or to attract beneficial insects. Paying attention to what is growing in your little plot with teach you much about what the soil needs and what is available for use.

The director loved it. What do you all think?

BRILLIANT! Seriously that's really good stuff and it explains more than just "its unsightly". When you explain why more folks might actually take notice and think rather than look for a spray to get rid of the weeds.

That is exactly what I was trying to get across.

I have one couple that DH and I work for and they are chemical crazy. They have a spray for EVERYTHING. The funniest part is they also have the biggest bugs and weeds I have ever seen. The more they spray the more resistant everything in their yard becomes. I planted them some veggies and gave strict orders, no spray. Well if I didn't go and fine the cukes brown and shriveled. I confronted them about it. But Preen isn't a spray, I was told. :barnie They don't understand that weed killers don't know the difference between weeds and non-weeds. I didn't even get into the real reason I want them to stop. :he

Thanks for the feedback.

That's great! Definitely giving those folks a little peek into poor, misunderstood weeds and their value (especially as an indicator of soil health, as you said.) I can hardly find a dandelion in my yard anymore because I eat them! And my bees love the clover, so I make DH cut the grass on high so that it can bloom for them.

Sounds good to me!
I need to add that as an old country gal, raised in hard times-I reuse, recycle, and use what is available every time its possible!! and I wish you a lot of success in passing along how important this is to mother earth, as well as a much healthier diet. Who could not benefit from non- toxic solutions -as a blood purifer, kidney cleanse etc!

I eat my dandelions too. Pick them young, wash and chop. Throw some evoo or bacon fat in a pan, chop chives, garlic and parsley, throw them in cook up a bit then throw in the dandelions. Sometimes I will chop up kelp too and toss that in with it. YUM!!
