Kohlrabi has been a July crop for me. It seems like the wrong thing to bury in the ground with the carrots and such, here in a couple days. After all, it is a stem and not a root!

I will slice and use the kohlrabi in stir fries with the greens and pretend it's July . Use and pretend until the ground is covered by too much snow, that is.

The temperatures aren't supposed to rise out of the 30's and 40's Fahrenheit over the next couple of days. I suppose that a little of that snow might be falling as this rain begins to trail off. Remarkable for this country, we may have thunderstorms this afternoon!

I just set some concrete stepping stones in the yard. Who knows, they may float away!!

Steve ;)

I still have a couple of kohlrabi growing in my patch.
I only grow them to show to my non gardening friends. They get a lot of laughs.
The only thing I've ever used them for, other than fun, is cole slaw. They do make good cole slaw!!!

I had a few seeds left over from a couple years ago. As the season went on and I had a little space, I went ahead and planted them. They are just beginning to bulb out- I have my doubts, but I didn't want to hang onto to the seed for another year! I'll report back in, if I actually harvest any...

My grandma was wise in the way of kids. She knew they never like to try anything new so the first time she served a new vegetable she told us it was just for the grown ups, not for kids. Of course next time she served it we had to eat it to show how grown up we were.

My grandmother did the same thing, Hoodie!

. . . cannellini beans with kale soup! Yeah, that's the way a lot of this kale will go.

Cole slaw . . . generally, I don't care for raw cabbage. Kohl slaw . . . hmm.

I remember my Grandfather growing kohlrabi when I was a youngster, and thought I would try it this year as a fall crop. I planted seed first week of September, and I'm starting to get bulbs now. Not only am I fighting the weather, but I can't keep the chickens from feasting on the greens, they LOVE it!

Hey, Farmington, if you want to eat that kolrabi, you better put up a fence! Those chickens are little piggies! Whenever I harvest mine, I always give the leaves to the chickens, they do seem to be a favorite!
