I must have the only garbage man on earth who is awesome. First week we moved in he got off his truck while I was weeding my rosebed to see my then 2 month old son. Now as a 3 year old he waits nose pressed against the window to see the garbage man, who often does a little dance with his giant garbage-can-lifting-arm and toots his horn.
We completely adore him. I'm hoping to make him a little basket of some of the garden stuff I've preserved. Not sure if he'd like it or be weirded out by a thousand different jams
@AMKuska he would love it. Where I used to work, the drivers were thrilled when someone thought of them and gave them a gift. They work hard in an invisible industry. No one thinks about garbage until no one picks it up.
Amkuska, there was a little boy who used to live across the street. He loves garbage trucks and he was always out side to greet him with some home baked goodies. Our garbage man is so nice and all the neighbors love him. But I never thought of tipping him on the holidays. We just leave gatorade out for him throughout the year.
In Westchester co Wed is heavy trash day, they will take away anything that doesn't fit in trash cans. You willn't believe some of the things people throw away. Tues night you often find cars crusing very slowly down the street looking at the things waiting to be picked up Wed.
We have that pickup day 2 tines a year. Yep always something to pickup.
Cane I kind of hope the whole thing gets canceled! You truly are the little red hen. (I know, been there, done that too many times myself!)
hugs...
Nyboy, we used to have that pickup once a year. I can't remember how high your pile could be or how wide. They discontinued that but we now are allowed a free dumpster once a year. Yea, people would drive around picking up stuff. Here people still put free stuff out on the curb. My eyes are always glued to them. Last week I found 3 plastic pumpins! My husband said someone was starting to cross the street for them but when they saw me pick the last one they turned around. You have to be fast. Ha Many times the stuff is pretty decent. I have found a children's easle, stroller, ride on toys etc. I am very picky the stuff has to be in mint condition for me to pick it up, unless I know it's a project. I once picked up 2 composting bins. Kept one and gave one to my sister.
I have a friend who is a antique dealer, one day he walking down 5th ave and found a oriental rug in the trash. He knew it was a antique and a good one. He dragged the rug straight from the garbage to Sothebys auction house, where it was put in a sale. The rug sold for a little over $3,000 not bad for trash.
Yesterday, my son BBQed 350 hotdogs for his son's ( second grade ) " back to school " school open house dinner. Reminds me of the times that I helped BBQ ( Superior Court Judge's HUGE bbq trailer at the school parking lot) 350- 400 steaks plus MANY hotdogs and hamburgers for his as well as his brother's and sister's annual " back to school " fundraisers and donated items for auction that brought in thousands of $$$s. My wife poured MANY glasses of wine for the adults. FUN for one and all !
