I have a tree in my backyard that I like. I'm not sure exactly what kind it is, but I think they are supposed to produce a small plum. This tree creates really pretty, pink blossoms in the spring.

I need help identifying the tree, and diagnosing a discoloration problem. Some of the leaves are extremely pale, but I don't know why. I don't see any evidence of physical damage to the the tree so I'm thinking it's a disease or nutritional deficiency.

Here are some pictures:

The dark leaf is the normal color:

Any thoughts, suggestions, or sources of info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I have absolutely no idea what's the matter with it, if anything....

I just wanted to say that it sure is pretty.

Certainly no expert here, but it appears to be a phosphorous deficiency to me because of the magenta veining. You could take a leaf to a good tree nursery and get help from a knowledgeable person there. I looked this up in my Ortho problem solver (most nurseries have a copy of this and they might look it up for you, or let you take a peek). The book recommends Miracle-Gro Bloom Buster which is more than half phosphorus. They also say to water the plant with the same solution, then to feed it with a good bulb food that you will scratch into the soil surface. Phosphorus does't move through the soil well, so the quickest way would be the foliar feeding, and the bulb food would help the soil phosphorus content for a longer term solution.
Hope you get an answer that works!
Your tree is a flowering plum btw, and often they set small fruit too.

Thanks for the thoughts, Thistle.

I'm going to head to the nursery today and see if I can get some answers, and I'll be sure to post back and let you know what I find out.

I went to a local nursery supplier today to ask about the tree and they said I have an iron deficiency. Apparently it has been a big problem around here this year since we've had so much more rain than usual. I think it washes away or dilutes a lot of the minerals.

Thanks again for your help!

I only know the common name. It's a "purple leaf flowering plum tree". I have 3 of them. But have never had any problems with them. Hope that helps.
