My poor Columbine! The leaf miner is always a problem. I have never seen it this bad. Normally I would pluck off affect leaves but that would leave NOTHING on the plant!

Then there is Bigfoot.... my 3 year old Grandson. Actually a little guy. But he steps on EVERYTHING. That big rock in front of the broken plant is where he goes to feed the fish. (About 3 feet wide and one step from sidewalk. Still he wanders off and tromps Grandma's flowers.) :( Good thing Grandma loves the imp. :p

I have the same problem with leaf miner, but haven't ever done anything about it. Seems like the plants do just fine until bloom period is over anyway.

While mowing yesterday I spotted a black Nora Barlow hiding in the shade garden. Must remember to catch those Columbine seeds.

You have to make your garden kid friendly or accept broken stems from time to time. My toddler son used to step on the strawberries to get to the peas. Then he would sit on the fruit while he had his fill of peas.

@smartred The yard is a kid friendly as we can get. I will trim off broken stems and they will be fine. He just doesn't watch his step and wants to follow G'ma around. His older brother helped weed and did a good job watching his step and only pulling up what Grandma pointed out. He was just as bad a few years ago. I am just so pleased to have them come play and garden with us I do not mind a few trampled plants.

Spinosad.

It is supposed to work against leaf miners. I still haven't used it for them. The last couple of years havent been bad years with that pest.

Carol I have a 4 year old bigfoot godson named Tyler. He loves pulling flower heads off plants. He also enjoys playing chace with my dogs though the flower beds. I had to reminded myself a few times, kids come before garden.

My swiss chard had leaf miner so bad I had to pull the plants up. Ditto about kids. My garden is as kid friendly as it gets. Yet, I live with the fact that I will have broken plants from time to time. It's especially hard to keep their hands off green fruit. They just can't wait till blueberries are blue or strawberries are red.

I have a bunch of daylilies planted around the crepe myrtle in the front yard. I seldom get to enjoy their blooms as it is the favorite climbing tree for our grand daughter and the kids across the street. It was the favorite climbing tree for our daughter too, so it is a 2nd generational thing. :love I'd rather have the kids. Just like you Carol, you gotta get your priorities straight!

of our trees have limbs too high to get in alone. So Papa places them there for photo ops!
