I'd go with seeds for sure. I just happened to plant watermelon yesterday from transplants I bought at the nursery. But it was a set of 6 sprouts for $1.50. It was cheaper then a pack of seeds while I was there.

Melons LOVE our southern heat.... they should do well for you! :)

You could try Swiss chard. It is a leafy green that you could leave in place for the rest of the summer and on past the frost. You maybe able to harvest it untill spring down there. It tasts like spinash, grows like beets, is very easy to germinate, and will keep coming back as you harvest it.
