I'm on year 3 with my asparagus. I hope to get enough to eat for supper. I need more! It is very easy to grow. Give it some compost, water and that's about it.

Spent the better part of yesterday putting in the first of several raised beds. This one will be for Asparagus. Its 36" x 16', I'm rushing to get this one in, I'd like to get it planted this year before green up, Lord knows it will take a few years to see the benefits. Anyone got any advise on the soil lay-up. I've got to add some filler for the back end, its a good 20" deep back there, but I'm sure with the proper lay-up I wont have to do to much to it for several years.

Did you put hardward cloth underneath? Gophers by the 100's here.

Like Carol said, that's such a fun age, then give them about 10 years and they don't find helping quite as fascinating. But mine came back to it and helped me for several years with the garden maintenance business. That's a fun age too!
Your raised beds are lookin' good. DH and I are discussing that for my veg garden. Maybe this fall if we get a lot on the list checked off.

No gophers here, some rabbits, squirrels, and deer, but no burrowing pest.

@Lickbranchfarm for your asparagus bed would highly recommend making it out of block,asparagus crowns will produce for between 10-15 years. yellow pine might last 3 years before replacing.....
heres mine it's about 14 years old. they are slowing down only picked about 10 lbs last year.....
in past have been a bible banger against pressure treated lumber.. have researched the lastest chemicals they use as well researched web sites on using in vegetable raised beds... all i can find out is the higher content of copper has been added so the recommend not to plant root veggies with in 6" of the wood.. of course you would not be organic.... look around on the web and you make your own decision ..
needless to say i will be slowly switching all my beds over to pressure treated..

I like the blocks. But we're thinking of making some out of wood. Cedar or redwood. Checking CL for somebody's demo'd deck. That's what we used for my chicken coop, a client had stored the decking they took off their cabin underneath the cabin and let me have it for the hauling away.
Our old house had raised beds my dh made for my birthday. They were redwood and still in beautiful shape after 10 years.

Well, more than likely when this wood bed goes down hill, I'll rebuild it with block. Kicking myself now....when I cleared the lot for our new house, I found the foundation of an old tobacco barn, 100's of old cinder blocks, you know the kind that weigh 75 lbs. a piece, gave them to a guy just to come get them.
