We have one on the front of out garage. I do not think it is tilted right, as we have to be within 3 feet of the door to get it on. And coming from the house we stumble through the dark until we can almost touch the car before it goes on! Yet any leaf, cat or loose dog will set it off at all hours of the night. Grrr.

Ya'll are giving me ideas. Moving from town to the land of no street lights..... I'll need to see where I'm going out in the dark. There is a booger light on the light pole, I'll see about getting it turned on. But I think a motion sensor light would bug me to death.

Except for the spotlights I will need -- shining into my neighbors' windows -- to keep an eye on my chickens and pigs, I really don't like to keep lights burning 24/7. I love the dark and enjoy being outside in the dark. It is only for visitors that I would want light -- for safety and security -- and for that motion detectors seem the best choice.

Granted, here in the sticks, a passing deer or raccoon could set one off, but I wouldn't see it at night anyway. For myself, a lantern or flashlight works just fine.

I don't always know why my neighbors' light(s) is/are on.

The neighborhood cats are probably often responsible. Around here, and whether one has a cat or not, a tomcat is bound to show up every night to pee on the shoes you left beside the backdoor.

The movement of the trees is a constant trigger on windy nights.

don't have motion detecting lights around my place or a light on the electric pole. I'm like Smart Red i love being outside in the dark and a flashlight works just fine for me. i do however have a driveway alarm motion detector. the first day i hooked it up it went off half a dozen times, every time a leaf would blow across it's path. i spent the day looking down the driveway to see who was coming. by day 3 i turned it off.

I installed one on the side of my barn where the 'people' door is. I LOVE that just about the time I'm too far for the porch light from the house to do me any good, the barn light comes on to get the rest of the way across the yard.
I've got 2 of the little battery powered "Mighty Light" (as seen on TV) on each side of the gate post. No matter which way you're coming from, it lights up the gate so I don't fumble with the latch. I'm planning to add one of the light socket kinds to the porch so I can stop leaving a light on all day when I know that I'm going to be late getting home.
The only 'problem' I've had was a couple of weeks ago when the gate light kept going on and off. I couldn't figure out what was going on out there.... (or who was out there) until I realized that it was the giant oak leaves falling and setting it off.

Thank you, @goatgurl. I had planned to install a driveway alarm. I guess I will have to reassess doing that.

Even though I installed the two automatic lights inside the barn and shed I'm a firm believer that when the sun goes down it's supposed to be dark. There is a pole mounted light about 1/2 mile down the road in our next-door neighbor's front yard that drives me crazy when the stars are bright. I just love to walk in the back forty with the dog when it's pitch dark.

@Smart Red, i am still going to try to figure out something for the driveway. just don't know what or how. at least with all these freezes almost all of the leaves are gone. maybe i'll try again when they are all gone. my house is almost .2 miles from the main road and i just like knowing when someone is on their way up.
