I didn't want to got to the Arthur bird sale, bc you don't know what's gonna be there.
I didn't want to order from a hatchery bc the stupid post office now only has 3 hrs/day with a postmaster, so they'd probably die.
I didn't want to order 25 birds bc I already have19--until Saturday, then two old hens go in a pot for dinner.
I ordered 5 pullets from Farm & Fleet, and they LOST my order!!!! 'O'
Too bad for them that Rural King has been competing with them for 3 years bc they were able to put through a last minute order for me. My chicks came in less than a week.
Saturday they go out in the 110 gallon leaky horse trough that is now my brooder. They're outgrowing the 10 gallon fish tank fast!!

They are all going to be gorgeous, of course, but Im interested in how those dark ones feather out. That should be interesting.

If you really wanted to order chicks (it sounds like you don't need to) you could talk to the post master and see how they would handle that. Some are really helpful and some, well, it's a family forum so I'll behave. It sounds like you have a system that's working. If it ain't broke,.............

The Post Office is fooling around with personnel and timetables here. We used to have a part timer, and she was very helpful. NOW, we get different people ALL OF THE TIME. They put stamps on ANY mail that only has our street address. We have to go pick up our mail from the box in the building. ALSO, the previous good postmaster would put extra mail that didn't fit in a bigger box, and include a key to that box that you slipped in the local slot after retrieving.
They are making themselves even MORE useless than the post office has been. At some point everybody is gonna be avoiding any snail mail and use FedEX and UPS for everything, except documents which we can email to each other. :somad
I agree--I'd like to see what color the dark one turns out to be. Oh, my, "The Dark One"--good name for a hen!

my mama took her two baby chicks (about 2 wks old) out into the woods today. it's very securely fenced & lots of cover from aerial predators - but still....

I want to build a brooder. just haven't gotten serious enough yet. I love the idea of a brooder that is always ready.

I recycled my 110 gallon steel horse trough into a brooder after it sprung a leak. Hard to fix steel and the edges can be sharp--bad for my horses. I just filled it (upright) with about 2 inches of soil, covered that with pine shavings and use old, white/colored very old bath towels for the just hatched to about 3 week old chicks. It's warm, soft and keeps them from slipping and laming themselves. I just change them every day or so, bleach them, and store them for next time.
BTW, I think I bought a straight run and now I think I have two more baby roosters! First, I thought, "dinner", but now I think I'll raise them up for next year's breeding roosters.
