I have used, and like, these folks. You get a lot of seed and the shipping charge is very reasonable.

If I'm not mistaken I believe Southern Exposure is a co-op although you have to grow organic seed to be a member. I remember once ordering seed from them and receiving it with one of the members labels on it. I hasten to add it was very good seed. They have to meet quality standards to stay a member.

Don't assume, ASK them if they grow all their own seed. If they are honest, they should tell you where they get their seed from.
OK I did send them an e-mail... will post the response.
This is the response I got. I am comfortable with it.

Hi Teresa,

We grow some of the seeds here, but we do also buy seeds from trusted suppliers. We do not buy from any of the large companies that are doing genetic modification. We care just as much about seed purity as you do. :) All of our varieties are heirlooms, so you don't have to worry about that sort of thing.

Any other questions, please let me know!

I'm glad they supply what you want. When you deal with honest people, they will be glad to be open about their program. There are a lot of honest people, companies out there--on both sides of the debate.

Here's the opposite side of the coin. This article contains the names of some of the companies owned by Monsanto. Some that you thought were independent are not. Monsanto doesn't advertise they own them, for obvious reasons.
There are also some interesting links about the subject if you wish to follow up.

Thanks so much for the link to this article. I'm really disappointed with Territorial Seed, I have purchased seeds from them since 1987. What an eye opener.

I contacted Territorial to find out if they purchase seed from Seminis. They told me that they no longer buy seeds from Seminis.

The article from Vermont seed is dated 1/24/10, so it may be dated. I checked Territorial's recent catalog and did not find any of the seedes listed in their Seminis seed list provided to Vermont Seed. I believe Territorial no longer supports Seminis seed co.

Just want avoid confusion about Territorial Seed, I've had good success with their seeds.

hoodat,
Please don't take this the wrong way but I wouldn't trust that post one bit.
This is a Quote from Burpee web page, http://www.burpee.com/gygg/content.jsp?contentId=about-burpee-seeds#null

By George Ball - Burpee Chairman and CEO said:
I own W. Atlee Burpee & Co. Burpee is NOT owned by Monsanto. We do purchase a small number of seeds from the garden seed department of Seminis, a Monsanto subsidiary, and so do our biggest competitors. We do NOT sell GMO seed, never have in the past, and will not sell it in the future.
To my knowledge Stokes is independently owned company that does not sell GMO seed and like Burpee, Stokes purchase a small number of seeds from Seminis's garden seed department.

Thanks for the clarification. I hope you're right about Burpee. They have been the leading company in hybrids for a long time and have many exclusive hybrids of their own. Hybrids are a natural cross and they occur many times in nature without mans' intervention. Hybrids - SI GMO - NO.

Monsanto has confused the issue by calling some of their GMO monstrosities,"genetic hybrids".

We sell seed. Many of the companies you order from get it from us, BUT this year we are opening up our seed to consumers.
