It is icy..down here in SC. The bird netting we have over the run...is covered with ice. I cam watching it closely. It has dropped 2x previously, due to ice and snow weight. Then the flock is running around all confused with the open sky above them, and netting to get caught in. Last time, Nov 1st snow, it dropped and covered their water buckets to where they couldn't get them. And we were out of town that day.
I had some freezing rain followed by sleet followed by about an inch of snow. The freezing rain was really not much, certainly not enough to cause a power outage here, but further south there are some power outages. No power outages here, that's the big thing for me since I don't have to go anywhere I can't walk.
Anywhere a vehicle has packed the snow down it was solid ice this morning but it will be above freezing soon if it isn't already even with a morning low of +8 F. That puts a thin film of water on the ice, really slick, but by the end of the day it should not be too bad. I think the roads will be decent anywhere the sun hits them, especially if by crushing the snow it goes form white to dark and solar energy kicks in.
For me, in many ways, not much of an event thankfully.
DH left early for work this morning. The SCHP site posted many trees down across roads. He has 45 miles to drive to work as it is. Lots of opportunities for MVA's along the route.
He called me when he got to work to let me know he made it safe. He said it still took 3 men, himself included, to force open the sliding gate into their parking lot at work.
Online news for here, said 83,000 people in the Carolinas were without power this morning. We don't usually get it that bad, as we are just one the line between the Upstate and Midlands SC. After the last 4 winters here in our little place out in the country, we jow have a generator, extra water on hand, and a Coleman stove to cook on.
DH and I both moved to the "balmy" south to get away from the ice and snow of the midwest. I think some of it followed us.
we ended up with 1" of snow then it turned to sleet 2" took 5 tries to get the truck out, the roads were semi passable in spots but otherwise ok.south of I-40 that's where the ice really started asheboro had 1/4" of it, further south you went more there was.
not really looking forward to this next arctic blast coming in Wednesday evening, thank goodness duke power come out last summer to grease the bearings on the power meter.....
