I was at the nursery picking out a tree for a customer and this horseradish jumped out in the aisle and positively begged me to take it home and put it in the soil! What could I do? I knew it would eventually make me cry, but I considered it a good deed.
I did ,uh, sort of break the promise I made my husband to stop "adopting" plants when I visit nurseries, but I have been remarkably good this year...if you don't count those two clematis I got last month. But those were truly a necessity! Truly!
I wanted to show you guys my new buddy, I was so excited...I've never grown horseradish... nobody else seems to get how exciting this is! What's up with that?

My new buddy

Wait until you taste it!! It is life changing! My plot of it keeps getting a little bigger every year. Probably, a smart idea to keep it contained... Your cat looks very impressed with your newest purchase!

I think the husbands wouldn't mind so much if it weren't for those "adoption fees". :D I'm going to make it a point to adopt some horseradish this year too, among other things! Love your cute picket fence too, btw!

I would be happy to send out some roots- no "rehoming" fee charged! It would help me get my patch down to a more reasonable size!

Oooh, I'll take you up on that then! Shoot me a PM and I'll mail you the postage. Do you have to wait until fall to dig it?

Skeeter- I assumed I could dig some this year...? Guess that's something I'll find out. :)
Lesa- I remembered Steve's dire story about his dad's plot, so I thought I'd play it safe. The cat is actually laughing at my purchase...he's so cynical!

ETA Thanks Journey! Yeah if my husband actually knew what the adoption fees are! Shhhh.... here he comes!

Ohhh, I am jealous! We picked up some roots to plant this spring, by the time the frost left the ground the roots had rotted. Well there's always next year I guess. It looks nice and healthy, congrats!

:) Very cool! I've never seen horseradish plants down here in our nurseries. Can I grow it here? I'd love to try it. thistle, you have a beautiful place. I love the picket fence and the cute kitty.

My new neighbor gave us some plants from his horseradish when he moved in. He said it's 3 years until you can harvest. I wonder if you could dig it early & just get a smaller root.
