There are still places where affordable internet is difficult to find. I switched from dial-up to satellite when I was told my part of "the sticks" was eligible for this service through TARP funding. Otherwise, I'd be paying over $100 a month for internet service -- NOT! I'd still be on dail-up.
So far, there I'd one provider, it is satellite, limited to how much you can use and expensive. There is one more company I'm going to call. They send a tech out to our house to see if they get s signal, so far, a big fat NOPE!
I have Wild Blue through a government program to bring internet to outlying places like mine -- and perhaps yours, @baymule? Not nearly as cheap and dial-up, and not as fast as son's $10 a month Charter service, but it gets me on line for under $50 a month. Try here or here to see if it gets to rural you.
Thanks for the advice everyone, I am looking forward to getting started. I dug my Mantis out today, I need to rebuild the carburetor, will get the kit tomorrow and hopefully will have it running tomorrow afternoon. The weather is not cooperating, we got more snow yesterday and the temps won't be above freezing at night for a prolonged period until the 31st. Sigh, Mother Nature has a sick sense of humor.
