Finally finished the barrel composter I started. I am now trained on the rivet gun . I also got a nice load of barrels for $15. Laid them out in garden to figure out plan. I bought 4 barrels but only plan on 2 extra right now. That is an extra cubic yard of garden.

*As always use FOOD GRADE barrels purchased from user with content's lot labels intact. Uncleaned so you can confirm content if possible*

Planted some more yesterday, carrot seeds, salad mix, bush beans. Not sure if it is too hot for the salad mix, package said okay thru April. We'll see. Apples and blueberries are growing well.

We also got a little wood fire pit and had our first camp out for the season in the backyard. Ash and charcol went in composter. Currently have a bunch of fruit flies in there. Hoping add wood chips and the ash will help.

First ripe blueberry from my bushes. Need to figure out bird protection cause they've been eyeing my garden. Saving grace so far is my indoor / outdoor cat loves to bask inside my garden since fence keeps the kids away.

Rip 2x4's in half and make a frame to put over the blueberries, then drape with bird netting.

On the salad mix, plant in the fall. Your fall garden can include cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, turnips, mustard greens, kale, collards, lettuce, and green onions. In your climate, you can garden all year. Cool weather crops will overwinter and kick it in high gear when the weather warms in early spring. If you like Sugar Snap peas and English peas, plant them in mid to late January.

I already used up the packet but it is in deep shade pot due to cucumber trellis along NE side.

Quick and cheap plant labels made out of shims. They are $1.58 for 14. Carrots are starting to sprout below the cucumbers.

I'm thinking about planting strawberries in the apple tree planter. Will they hurt the apple tree? Can I add anymore dirt or does the entire graft need to stay exposed.

i'd not bury the graft.

strawberries will do best in full sun, but they may produce under a small apple tree the first or second season. depends upon how much light they get from the sides. where you are it and in a container i hope it doesn't get too hot for the tree or for the strawberries. have to make sure they don't dry out.
