She's looking good Bay. She'll really start to shine once you worm her. Then she will start getting all the good from the groceries you're feeding her.

The older I get the shorter I like my horses, haha.

The kill pen said 14.3 I like shorter horses too. My crapped out knee won't let me grovel and crawl up on a 16.2 horse any more. I might be able to get on and go ride, but I better not get off and try to get back on! LOL

She is starting to look pretty good. with all of that green grass as a temptation , pulling a mouth full of grass would also pull grass roots covered with sand, so just keep an eye out for sand colic .

I did the poop in a jar of water sand colic check and didn't find any.

She sounds like a good temperament!! Yes, horses usually signal before they kick bc they grow up learning how to "talk" to other horses. Glad you are training her to respect the dogs. Your dogs will usually respond in kind and protect THEIR horses, too, just fyi to the non-horsey folks here.
I can already see some weight gain on her, so she was just starved, not a hard keeper. My Vet lost customers during the 2nd great depression, people who couldn't afford their horses or dogs and had to give them up. Could be this horse was owned by a hoarder, or a well meaning "animal collector."
@baymule knows that it is vital to be retraining as you put weight on any new horse bc as they start to feel better they Will show you any bad habits, if they have any.
I bet she will protect you in the future. Our big guy (16'3") was trained by the breeder/original trainer to keep the rider's legs away from trees (on trail rides). Are you going to work on that? Anxious to hear more about her health and training!!

I wormed Pearl yesterday with ivermectin. The vet said it was time and she would be ok. I've been worried that it might be too much for her starved condition. She has gained weight, amazing what regular feed and hay can do. She now knows that she can't rush in to eat, but must back up, stand and then I let her eat. She's coming along!

She's going to be just fine! I'm glad that you're being cautious - better safe than sorry.
When I first brought Gail home I could count every bone, even her spine. Pearl was certainly very thin but she is already showing such progress . By the time she sheds out in the spring you will have to show folks pictures to prove how thin she was, no one's going to believe you.

New Pearl pictures! She has gained so much weight, probably close to 300 pounds. Her backbone stuck up so far, her ribs showed and now she has muscle along her backbone. She still has a ways to go, but we are making progress.
