Melons for a cool growing season

I have had NO LUCK with melons AT ALL. Some never grew. Others were eaten by squirrels and earwigs. I got nothing.

I may give passport a try. The cool nights where I am are not helpful for melon growing. I also saved some seeds from a rather tasty rocky ford melon I bought at the farmers market. Those grow like crazy on the western slope. I might be able to get some to grow here.

Sorry to hear about that wifezilla, i hope you have better luck are you going to get some transplants at a nursery?, it might be a little late to plant melons now.

I started with seeds. Then I tried nursery starters. I have given up for this year. I will try again next year. I am experimenting with squirrel proofing some growing beds and also coming up with an effective earwig barrier.

I snagged me some "Collective Farm Woman" and "Chanterai" melon seed the other night, from Sustainable Seed.
I went looking for "Passport" originally, but who can resist a name like "Collective Farm Woman?"

I wanted the mention the crimson since it grew so quickly... I will for sure do it next year... but there is the North Carolina Giant variety I want to try... it won't ripen until August here. I know never year I wanted to do an early variety and a long season so I can have a long harvest. Even if Crimson takes longer for you then me... I'm sure you'd be picking melon mid august.

You should try Carolina Cross Watermelons next summer, i'm sure they would do great.

I'm going to have to look into those!

My daughter has enjoyed her first watermelon from the garden and she loves it! (She did NOT like the store bought precut I've tried to get her to eat before... she refused!!!) So now I know watermelon won't get wasted around here.
