I've used the "Pantyhose" method with my cabbages as well....cabbage worms won't chew thru the nylons....nicer looking heads without using pesticides....and the heads expand and grow in the nylons.
:th

I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you.....

I'm such a shmuck! Every year and Every season I lose my cabbage to cabbage moths... I did row covers this year and it seemed to stunt their growth, then I pull the row covers off and STILL chewed up by cabbage moth worms.

This is now my spring solution. I will NEVER give up on my yummy cabbage!!! :thumbsup

glad to help..... There has been MANY people on here that have had great advice....I've been taking notes and plan on taking this info with me to the gardens.... ALSO...... I take my empty paper towel and toilet rolls and cut them into rings and place them around my young transplants so to deter the cutworms....works for me....

Thanks for all the replies! ;)

wifezilla,

:gig You know what, I'm actually thinking of making the trellis out of steel pipes. I probably should, to be able to hold all that weight from the melons and especially watermelons. I grow bamboo and use them for trellises throughout the garden, but don't even think bamboo would be strong enough.

vfem,

Pantyhose sounds like a great idea for the melons. I would even think the pantyhose would serve other purposes, like help protect the melons from bugs and maybe even protect the melons from creatures like raccoons looking for food.
I'm interested to see how the pumpkins will do for you vfem on a trellis. Wouldn't it be great if maybe squash vine borers left the pumpkins alone if they were on a trellis? But yes, saving space in the garden with the trellises is a good thing :) .

Ariel,

Interesting, but i still would support the melons even if they did grow a thicker stem, just to make sure. Maybe that's why melons grown on the ground have a thinner stem since they really don't need so much support compared to the melons with trellis. I'm sure melon bras would make a nice conversation  .

Greenthumb, unfortunately, the vine borers get right in at soil level-so the trellis will not be much help in that area.
