anyone use them? Is this something that sounds fun but you quickly grow tired of? Certain things to make sure it has if buying. Brand or model you like? Big R has them for 1/2 off.
if you're my dh it was something you've used twice & seems to have stayed in the same spot in the house the past couple months. he got the Fisher F4 which is a nice one. 5 year warranty & made in US. he says he plans to use it this weekend. the idea was to use it to find his mother's wedding band & other possible items left from former owners of the property (100+ year old house on old farm land). i keep finding things every time i till the garden so i know there is some neat stuff out there.
if my dh was a more active/motivated guy i think it would have been a good investment for him.
My DH has one but doesn't use it very often. I think it's something he would like to do more, but he is trying to make up for lost time. Too many things to do!
He got it out to take on his trip out to Colorado, but decided not to take it. He did a little panning for gold, but found none. Drat! I was ready to retire on the big "strike it rich" vein he didn't find. (Oh, yeah, I'm already retired.)
i figure i could use it sometime when i go to till a friend's property since i've found some unusual items when i tilled in the past. why would someone bury a tire iron about 6" down?!?
heh, not sure, but it was between the 2 properties & my friend lives in a co-op trailer park. it's a nice, modern double wide but not a very old house. the metal was corroded enough i figure it could have been in the ground for about 20 years. the trailer park has been there for about 35 years.
I bought one from Horrible Freight, I got this one because I borrowed one just like it to find a chain I'd lost in a hay field. It worked real good, I had walked over the chain a couple of times looking for it.
I used the detector and set about in a grid fashion and as soon as I came near the chain it set off a signal.
I ordered the same one and have used it a few times and "usually" find what I'm looking to recover.
I've never used it for recreation.
I believe the one DH has can be set to signal detection of different metals by emitting a different tone. That's probably a good thing to have, but I think it is pretty tricky to adjust accurately.
He also has a strong magnet attached to a pole that he uses to find lost screws, nails, etc. When we had our house re-roofed, he was busy quite a while finding roofing nails in the yard.
